Bangkok: The Thai Army has strongly denied accusations from Cambodia that Thai soldiers were responsible for a grenade attack, asserting that Cambodian soldiers accidentally stepped on landmines on their own territory.
According to Thai News Agency, Major General Winthai Suvari, spokesman for the Royal Thai Army, addressed the allegations made by Cambodia. Cambodia claimed that at 12:35 PM on July 5, 2026, seven Thai soldiers patrolling the Chong Krang area in Phanom Dong Rak District, Surin Province, threw a hand grenade into Cambodian positions, injuring three Cambodian soldiers. Major General Suvari categorically denied these claims, describing them as false and misleading. An immediate investigation conducted by Thai military units confirmed that the explosion occurred on the Cambodian side and was not caused by Thai forces.
The Thai Army clarified that during the incident, Thai personnel were engaged in routine patrols to secure road construction activities on the Thai side. They observed Cambodian soldiers monitoring their operations. At approximately 12:00 PM, Thai officials reported hearing an explosion from the Cambodian side, followed by efforts to rescue personnel injured by the explosion there. The Thai Army emphasized that no grenades were used or thrown by Thai forces. They attributed the incident to inexperienced Cambodian soldiers unknowingly stepping on a landmine left by their own side.
The Army spokesperson reaffirmed the Royal Thai Army's commitment to upholding agreements and adhering to the rules of engagement in line with international law. The spokesperson urged the public and international community not to believe distorted information that lacks evidence and called on Cambodia to stop spreading fake news that undermines bilateral relations and peace along the border.
