Bangkok: The Thai Army spokesperson has acknowledged the presence of Cambodian troops near Ta Kwai Temple, clarifying that this development is not a cause for immediate concern. Reports of a potential third clash, confirmed by the "Chief of Information," have been admitted as accurate by the spokesperson, who assured that Thailand remains vigilant and prepared with personnel and armaments.
According to Thai News Agency, Major General Winthai Suvari, representing the Royal Thai Army, discussed the deployment of Cambodian troops near the Thai-Cambodian border around Ta Kwai Temple in Surin province. He noted that while troops are still stationed near the border under the 2nd Army Region's jurisdiction, their proximity has decreased compared to earlier times. The shift in troop movements has led Cambodian forces to seek more suitable positions after retreating from areas now controlled by Thailand. Major General Winthai emphasized that while some troop movements have approached the border, they do not interfere with Thailand's operational boundary, thus posing no immediate threat. The 2nd Army Region's operations continue as usual, focusing on surveillance, patrolling, area inspections, and fortifying strongholds to ensure readiness for unforeseen events, alongside ongoing mine clearance operations.
Major General Winthai reiterated the importance of adhering to ceasefire agreements between Thailand and Cambodia. While Thailand strictly follows these terms, he noted that Cambodia has occasionally displayed provocative behavior, such as encroachment and disciplinary issues, leading to some weapons being seized by Thai forces. Ground units are equipped with measures to manage these situations, and current intelligence reports do not suggest any urgent threats. Nevertheless, Thailand remains vigilant in its defense responsibilities.
Addressing remarks by the Director of the Army Intelligence Department about the potential for a third clash, Major General Winthai acknowledged that Cambodian troop movements continue, though they are not yet at a critical level. He noted that while the situation could evolve, a clash is unlikely in the near term, with future assessments being conducted periodically.
Concerning reports of Cambodian military stockpiling weapons, Major General Winthai confirmed that Thailand had anticipated this and considers it a fundamental security responsibility. He assured that Thailand possesses reliable intelligence regarding the weapons accumulation by Cambodia.
Lastly, Major General Winthai remarked on the possibility of Cambodia leveraging military tensions for electoral gains in the upcoming elections. He acknowledged the potential for such a scenario, stating that clarity on the use of force may depend on additional factors.
