Thai Border Trade in January Reaches 145 Billion Baht Amid Growth

Bangkok: Thai border trade in January 2025 has shown significant growth, reaching a total trade value of 145 billion baht, according to a recent announcement by Deputy Government Spokesperson Ms. Sasikarn Wattanachan. This increase represents a 2.7% rise compared to the same period in the previous year, with exports and imports contributing to this growth.

According to Thai News Agency, the total trade value for January 2025 was 145,140 million baht. The export value stood at 78,037 million baht, marking a 3.8% increase, while imports were valued at 67,102 million baht, a 1.5% rise, resulting in a trade surplus of 10,935 million baht for Thailand.

The border trade with four neighboring countries contributed significantly to this growth, with a total trade value of 83,797 million baht, which expanded by 1.7%. Exports to these countries totaled 50,528 million baht, a 0.7% increase, and imports were at 33,269 million baht, expanding by 3.3%, resulting in a trade surplus of 17,260 million baht. Trade with Lao PDR topped the list at 25,228 million baht, followed by Malaysia, Myanmar, and Cambodia.

Cross-border trade with third countries also showed positive trends, totaling 61,343 million baht, reflecting a 4.2% increase. Exports accounted for 27,509 million baht, a notable 10.2% rise, while imports slightly decreased by 0.3%. China was the leading partner in cross-border trade, with a value of 34,622 million baht, expanding by 10.6%, followed by Singapore and Vietnam.

Looking ahead, Thailand’s border and cross-border trade is expected to maintain its expansion trend, particularly in exports to China, which saw an 18.0% increase. Noteworthy export products include synthetic rubber, fresh longan, and TSNR block rubber, which have all shown significant growth percentages. However, potential impacts due to geopolitical factors, like the crackdown on call center groups along the Thai-Myanmar border, may affect trade in the coming months, particularly in diesel and refined oils.

Ms. Sasikarn expressed gratitude towards Thai entrepreneurs for their role in driving economic growth through border trade. The government remains committed to fostering trade cooperation with neighboring and international partners, aiming to enhance economic opportunities and improve logistics efficiency for Thai entrepreneurs.
