Thai Cabinet Approves Key Measures in Tourism, Social Security, and Infrastructure

Bangkok:The recent Cabinet meeting has resulted in several resolutions aimed at boosting various sectors, including tourism, social security, and infrastructure in Thailand.

According to Thai News Agency, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is transforming "Mega Events" into "Mega Opportunities" to promote Udon Thani as a top tourist destination. By leveraging the Udon Thani Horticultural Expo 2026 and strategic marketing campaigns, TAT aims to enhance the visibility of Udon Thani, offering unique cultural experiences and boosting the local economy.

The Cabinet has also approved significant amendments to the Social Security Act, extending insured age up to 65 years to better accommodate the aging population. This includes expanding benefits and allowing pensioners to maintain certain protections post-employment. Amendments also aim to align the law with modern economic contexts and provide comprehensive protection to insured persons.

In another major decision, the Cabinet approved a draft bill amending the sign tax law, allowing for fairer tax collection based on actual usage. This move seeks to reduce unnecessary burdens on businesses, especially those using signs seasonally, and aims to enhance local revenue collection efficiency.

Additionally, the Cabinet approved toll fee exemptions on Expressway No. 7 and No. 9 during the 2026 flood situation to facilitate public travel amidst challenging weather conditions. This measure is anticipated to generate significant economic benefits despite a revenue loss from toll exemptions.

The Cabinet also sanctioned a loan of 18 billion baht for the State Railway of Thailand to cover operational expenses, addressing the liquidity challenges faced by the agency.

In other developments, the Cabinet has approved the appointment of new members to the Mass Transit Railway Authority of Thailand board and endorsed a unified fare system for Bangkok's mass transit rail networks. This includes a capped fare structure to reduce living costs for commuters in the region.

Furthermore, the Cabinet has designated over 8,500 rai in Kalasin and Phetchaburi provinces for land consolidation to enhance agricultural efficiency and irrigation systems, supporting long-term agricultural viability.

Lastly, the Cabinet confirmed the appointments of four new ambassadors and nine qualified members to the Special Cases Board, reinforcing Thailand's diplomatic and legal capacities.

These measures reflect the government’s strategic focus on economic development, social welfare, and infrastructure enhancement to foster sustainable growth in Thailand.
