Bangkok: Prime Minister’s Office Spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat announced that the Cabinet has approved the designation of Thai cats as a national identity in the pet category. This proposal, put forward by the National Identity Committee (NIC), aims to preserve and promote the unique heritage of Thai cats.
According to Thai News Agency, the decision followed extensive historical and genetic research, which identified five remaining purebred Thai cat breeds: Suphalak, Korat, Siamese, Korat, and Khao Manee. The government is prioritizing this designation to encourage recognition of their value, which is expected to lead to conservation efforts and cooperation in establishing standards for these purebred breeds.
This initiative is not only focused on conservation but also on promoting the breeding of more purebred Thai cats. It aims to protect the ownership rights of Thai cats and prevent their registration by foreigners, thereby fostering a sense of national pride. Additionally, it presents an opportunity to enhance their economic value and contribute to the creative economy related to Thai cats.
