Thai Cats Recognized as National Symbol of Pet Industry

Bangkok: The Cabinet has officially approved the designation of “Thai cats” as a national symbol in the pet industry, reflecting their unique appearance and personality, which are internationally recognized and celebrated.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Siripong Angkasakulkiat, spokesman for the Prime Minister’s Office, announced that the Cabinet, following a proposal from the National Identity Committee (NIC), has recognized Thai cats as a national identity within the pet category. This decision aligns with Thailand’s ongoing efforts from 1964 to 2024 to define its national identity across various dimensions, such as the “Thai elephant” as the national animal and the “wai” as a symbol of Thai greetings and respect.

The National Savings Bank (NSB) played a crucial role in this initiative, proposing the Thai Cat’s designation based on a resolution from March 21, 2025. Historical and genetic studies underscore the distinct characteristics of Thai cats, which have long been a part of Thai society. These cats hold cultural significance and are intertwined with Thai beliefs and lifestyles.

Thai cats, such as the Suphalak, Korat, Wichianmat, Konja, and Khao Manee, are among the few remaining purebred breeds and enjoy global popularity. The government’s recognition aims to protect these breeds from foreign registration and enhance their economic and cultural value. The Ministry of Culture has endorsed this initiative, emphasizing the need for conservation, standard-setting, and increased breeding of purebred Thai cats to boost the creative economy surrounding this unique national symbol.
