Thai Contingent Sets Ambitious Goal for 2026 Asian Games

Bangkok: The Thai contingent is setting its sights high for the upcoming 2026 Asian Games, with the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) and various sports associations aiming to secure at least 15 gold medals. This ambitious target reflects a strategic focus on quality and preparation for the games scheduled to take place from September 19th to October 4th, 2026, in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan.

According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Kongsak Yodmani, Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand, has outlined comprehensive plans to ensure the success of Thai national athletes. In collaboration with the National Sports Development Fund, the SAT has established training camp plans and allocated necessary budgets to build a strong and competitive team. These measures are intended to optimize the performance and resource management for the Thai athletes.

The selection process for the Thai national team emphasizes quality, involving rigorous qualification systems and consideration of world rankings in certain sports. The SAT and associated sports organizations have identified 11 high-stakes sports where they aim to achieve their gold medal target: sepak takraw, teqball, boxing, athletics, taekwondo, sailing, weightlifting, golf, badminton, jujitsu, and esports.

Dr. Kongsak highlighted that the SAT's criteria for athlete selection are divided into two categories: those who have qualified or have strong world rankings and are considered gold medal hopefuls or top contenders, and those with the potential to advance to the Olympic Games.

Reflecting on past achievements, at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, People's Republic of China, in 2023, the Thai contingent successfully secured 12 gold medals, 14 silver medals, and 32 bronze medals, achieving an overall ranking of 8th on the medal table.
