Thai Election Commission Schedules Concurrent Referendum and General Election

Bangkok: The Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) has announced that the upcoming referendum will be conducted on the same day as the general election. This synchronisation marks the first instance where the election of Members of Parliament will occur simultaneously with a referendum.

According to Thai News Agency, the ECT has released a notice confirming this arrangement, which is awaiting publication in the Royal Gazette to become official. The regulations stipulate that the referendum will coincide with the general election of members of the House of Representatives in 2025. These measures are in accordance with the Referendum Act B.E. 2564 (2021) and its amendments, requiring the Prime Minister to consult with the ECT to establish the referendum date. If deemed appropriate, both electoral processes will be held concurrently.

The ECT has further clarified that there will be no advance voting for the referendum. However, voters will have the option to cast their ballots outside their registered electoral district on February 8, 2026, to enhance public participation. This provision allows citizens registered in Songkhla Province to vote outside their district, thereby eliminating the necessity to travel back to their registered addresses. The Election Commission will announce additional details regarding registration once the regulations are officially published.
