Thai Foreign Minister Advocates Balanced Approach to Chinese Travel Advisory

Chiang Mai:Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow has called for a balanced approach to travel advisories following a recent warning from the Chinese Embassy. The advisory cautioned Chinese citizens to be wary of job offers that could lead to potential kidnappings in Thailand.

According to Thai News Agency, Sihasak emphasized that travel advisories should be appropriate to the situation to avoid causing excessive panic. He assured that Thailand prioritizes tourist safety, noting that visitors from various countries feel secure in the nation. He urged for collaboration to address the root causes of such concerns without unnecessary alarm.

In Chiang Mai, a popular northern tourism destination, local officials reported no immediate impact from the Chinese Embassy's notice. Keng Chaiwarin, director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand Chiang Mai Office, indicated that the travel sentiment among Chinese tourists remains positive, with no cancellations of hotel bookings or flights. He reaffirmed that the city, recognized as the safest in ASEAN for two consecutive years, is committed to ensuring the well-being of tourists.

Prasit Ittipattanakul, vice president of the Chiang Mai Tourism Business Association, acknowledged that the advisory might lead to short-term caution among tourists, with potential delays or rerouting. However, he highlighted that efforts to prevent scams and protect travelers are crucial for sustaining long-term confidence in Thai tourism.
