Thai Government Urged to Subsidize Fuel Costs Amid Rising Diesel Prices

Bangkok: The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has recommended that the government temporarily subsidize the fuel price difference to prevent potential disruptions in transportation services during the Songkran festival. This move comes amid concerns that rising diesel prices, which have surpassed 50 baht per liter, could leave travelers stranded.

According to Thai News Agency, the deputy secretary-general of the Thai Sang Thai Party has proposed a comprehensive plan for the government to manage transportation efficiently during the upcoming Songkran festival. The proposal was made in light of the significant impact that the surge in diesel prices is having on transportation operators, who have threatened to halt services nationwide on April 9 if no action is taken.

Mr. Best Wongpairojkul, Deputy Secretary-General of the Thai Sang Thai Party, has voiced his concerns about the readiness of the public transportation system as the festival approaches. He highlighted the urgent need for government intervention, given the expectation that over 180,000 people will be traveling daily. Despite the Bus Terminal Company (BKT) freezing ticket prices until April 19, privately operated buses and vans are struggling to cope with the high diesel costs.

Without clear relief measures by April 9, there is a risk that people who have already booked or plan to buy tickets will find themselves stranded as services may cease. The government is urged to use central funds to provide immediate fuel subsidies to public transport operators for the duration of the 10-day festival period. This step would ensure continuous operation and prevent operators from excessively hiking ticket prices, thus safeguarding the public's right to return home without financial burden.

Mr. Wongpairojkul further expressed concerns regarding the working conditions at major transport hubs like Mochit Bus Terminal and Bangkok Central Station. As boarding points for key routes are set to be adjusted after 6:00 PM, he emphasized the necessity for clear communication and adequate facilities to handle extreme weather, particularly on hot days. The government must ensure that bus terminals are equipped with cooling systems, misting fans, and free water stations to protect the health of travelers, especially the elderly and children. A reliable and accessible transportation system should serve all segments of the population with convenience and dignity.
