Thai Labour Ministry Launches Initiatives to Address Unemployment Amid Middle East Conflict

Bangkok: Labour Minister Trinuch Thianthong has expressed her concerns about the potential rise in unemployment among Thai nationals due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the global economic recession. To combat this, the Ministry of Labour is expediting the creation of 50,000 job openings to accommodate affected individuals.

According to Thai News Agency, the Minister has been proactive in addressing the anticipated layoffs, with recent data indicating a projected increase in layoffs of workers under the Social Security Act (Section 33) by the end of 2025. The figures suggest a shift from an annual average layoff rate of 7% to an expected 20% increase, equating to 531,779 layoffs. By 2026, layoffs are expected to continue at a rate of at least 40,000 per month due to economic challenges, intense competition, geopolitical conflicts, and technological advancements replacing traditional labor roles.

The Ministry of Labour, under Trinuch's directive, has implemented a robust policy to ensure stable employment for Thai citizens. The Department of Employment has identified over 54,000 job openings across various sectors, including sales, administration, and warehousing. These efforts are supported by the enhancement of the "Thai Jobs" platform, which aims to match job seekers with suitable opportunities using an AI system that factors in skills and geographical location.

Additionally, Ms. Treenuch highlighted the development of a "Freelance Worker" platform by the Department of Employment, designed to facilitate freelance job opportunities. The platform serves as a comprehensive online hub for employers and freelancers, enabling direct communication and negotiation without intermediary fees. It covers a spectrum of professions, including video production, product reviews, and more, while ensuring the credibility and security of users through identity verification via the ThaID application.

Mr. Somchai Morakotsriwan, Director-General of the Department of Employment, emphasized that the "Freelance Workers" platform accommodates a broad range of professions and allows users to rate and review job opportunities, enhancing the decision-making process for both employers and freelancers. The platform is accessible via the website freelanceworkers.doe.go.th or through the "Freelance Workers" application.

Individuals interested in utilizing the platform can register and verify their identity to advertise their services. Employers can similarly register to find suitable workers, negotiate job details, and manage projects through the system's online interface. For additional information, individuals are encouraged to contact local Provincial Employment Offices, Bangkok Metropolitan Employment Offices, or the Ministry of Labour hotline.
