Bangkok:MPs from the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) have urged Thailand to maintain its active role in international parliamentary forums to clarify the Thai-Cambodian border dispute.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phanthil Nuamjerm and Mr. Thanyathorn Thaninwattanathon, both MPs from the People's Party, expressed concerns at a press conference about Thailand not sending a delegation to the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA). They highlighted the missed opportunity to present facts and Thailand's position on the Thai-Cambodian border situation, which involves national sovereignty and interests.
During the Asian Parliamentary Assembly's Committee on Social and Cultural Affairs meeting from September 24-27 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, Cambodia raised issues related to border clashes, the Preah Vihear Temple, and sovereignty. The absence of a Thai representative meant Thailand could not clarify its stance on these matters. Mr. Phanthil pointed out that although a draft statement was prepared and submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it could not substitute for direct representation at the forum.
Issues concerning cultural heritage in conflict zones were also discussed, including attacks on heritage sites and military activities near such locations. Mr. Phanthil emphasized the importance of Thailand presenting comprehensive facts to prevent a one-sided international perception.
Furthermore, the allocation of opposition representatives in Thai parliamentary delegations to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) was discussed, aiming for broader participation in international missions. Mr. Phanthil stressed that international parliamentary duties concern overall national interests, and representatives from all sides should participate to maintain Thailand's position and protect national interests.
