Bangkok: The Thai beach games team achieved a commendable second-place finish at the 6th Asian Beach Games 'Sanya 2026' in Sanya, People's Republic of China, by securing 10 gold medals. The Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) plans to leverage this performance, along with data and statistics, to enhance their strategy for the upcoming Asian Games. According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Kongsak Yodmani, the Governor of the SAT, expressed satisfaction with the Thai national team's overall performance, which included 10 gold, 9 silver, and 9 bronze medals. Although the team aimed for a top-three finish and a target of 15 gold medals, they successfully secured the second position on the overall medal table. Dr. Kongsak highlighted several sports for their exceptional achievements, including beach athletics, teqball, sailing, dragon boating, and beach volleyball. While acknowledging the near misses in some events that resulted in silver and bronze medals, he emphasized that these experiences are invaluable for the t eam's improvement in future competitions. The SAT plans to build upon these achievements as they prepare for the 20th Asian Games scheduled in Nagoya, Japan, from September 19th to October 4th, 2026. Focusing on the experience and skill development of the athletes, Dr. Kongsak noted that the games provided a platform to test physical prowess against some of Asia's leading nations. He emphasized that the SAT will continue training and analyzing results from the Asian Beach Games to fortify the team ahead of the Asian Games. The recently concluded 6th Asian Beach Games, held from April 22-30, 2026, saw the Thai contingent of 176 athletes compete in all 14 sports. Thailand's second-place finish came behind host nation China, which topped the medal count with 24 golds, 18 silvers, and 13 bronzes, while Iran placed third with 9 golds and 1 silver. Thailand's medal haul included significant contributions from sports such as Beach Athletics (3 gold, 1 silver), Teqball (3 gold), Sailing (2 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze ), Dragon Boat (1 gold, 4 silver, 1 bronze), and Beach Volleyball (1 gold, 1 bronze). Additional medals were secured in 3x3 Basketball, Beach Handball, Water Polo, and Jujitsu. The next edition of the Asian Beach Games is slated to take place in Cebu, Philippines, in 2028.
