Thai-UK Universities Collaborate to Enhance Innovative Research Strategy

Bangkok: The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation recently hosted the “Thai-UK University President Symposium” to explore collaborative research strategies and establish the “Thai-UK Higher Education Strategic Leadership / President Forum” to strengthen ties between the two nations.

According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Panupermsak Arunee, Assistant Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), participated in the symposium organized by the British Council in collaboration with Universities UK International (UUKi). The event, titled ‘Roundtable Discussion on Thai-UK Higher Education Partnerships: Opportunities and Challenges,’ focused on fostering sustainable collaboration between Thai and UK higher education institutions. Dr. Arunee stressed the necessity of a shared vision, robust leadership, and continuous engagement to ensure a stable higher education system.

Dr. Panupasak highlighted the existing strong connections between Thailand and the UK in higher education, science, and innovation through initiatives such as the Newton Fund, Transnational Education (TNE), and the Thai-UK World-class University Consortium. He suggested three future development directions: Research and Innovation Collaboration, particularly in deep technology fields; Future Workforce Development through Dual/Joint Degrees, Micro-credentials, and Cross-border Learning; and Developing leadership and policy alignment for a resilient education system.

The proposal for a “Thai-UK Higher Education Strategic Leadership / President Forum” aims to define joint strategies between the two nations. This forum will include an Annual Summit, Thematic Working Groups on specific issues, and a Membership Network to facilitate collaboration between Thai and UK universities.

Ms. Anjali Sanders from Universities UK International (UUKi) provided insights into UUKi’s role in fostering international collaboration. She discussed key UK policies like the UK Immigration White Paper and the Industrial Strategy 2025, which emphasize the role of universities in innovation and skill development.

The symposium concluded with a Roundtable Discussion featuring representatives from three leading UK universities. They emphasized the importance of trust-based partnerships, research collaboration, student exchange, and nurturing future university leaders.
