Bangkok: Three prominent Thai universities-Mahidol, Chulalongkorn, and Chiang Mai-are set to revolutionize higher education with the introduction of the 'MC² GenEd' program, a collaborative educational initiative that allows students to learn across university boundaries.
According to Thai News Agency, the MC² GenEd (Mahidol-Chula-Chiang Mai General Education) project was officially announced during the event 'MC²: Beyond Boundaries, Building Future: Mahidol, Chula, Chiang Mai - Integrating Power for the Future of Learning' held at Chulalongkorn University. This pioneering program aims to prepare students for the evolving world of artificial intelligence and future challenges by creating a shared learning ecosystem that transcends traditional educational models. The initiative is set to begin in the 2026 academic year with an initial enrollment target of at least 1,000 students.
The collaboration among these universities marks a critical advancement in Thai higher education by allowing students to take general education courses across institutions, accumulate learning outcomes, and transfer credits. It emphasizes real-world experiences, expert guidance, and knowledge exchange, equipping students to navigate a rapidly changing global landscape. The MC² GenEd project is part of the larger MC² strategic partnership network, designed to enhance education quality, research, and innovation in Thailand and beyond.
The program will initially offer 24 pilot general education courses in various fields such as humanities, social sciences, science, technology, innovation, sustainability, and future skills. Students from all three universities can choose to study these courses either online or on-site, accommodating diverse learning preferences. The initiative also introduces advanced learning credit (ALC) accumulation, enabling credit transfers across universities based on specific conditions set by each institution.
Professor Dr. Vilelert Poorivachara, President of Chulalongkorn University, highlighted the importance of adapting education to the AI and digital era, emphasizing that education must extend beyond traditional classroom settings. He expressed confidence in the program's ability to prepare students as leaders of change by combining the strengths of the three universities.
Professor Dr. Piyamit Sritara, President of Mahidol University, underlined the project's commitment to experiential learning and collaboration with industry and society. He noted that the MC² GenEd program is an exemplary model for addressing modern educational needs and fostering professional skills through real-world experiences.
Professor Dr. Pongrak Sribanditmongkol, President of Chiang Mai University, emphasized the significance of learning from communities and sustainability. He stated that the collaboration aims to establish a flexible, student-centric education system, expanding access to knowledge and building a national learning network for the future.
This innovative initiative by Mahidol, Chulalongkorn, and Chiang Mai Universities is expected to serve as a blueprint for other higher education institutions, elevating educational standards and equipping graduates with the skills necessary to thrive in a dynamic global environment.
