Thai Windsurfing Team Prepares for Asian Beach Games in Sanya

Sanya: The Thai surfing team, preparing for the Asian Beach Games, has begun training in the sea. Overall, they have adapted well and are ready to compete for medals. According to Thai News Agency, the Thai national windsurfing team is gearing up for the 6th Asian Beach Games in Sanya, China. The windsurfing competition is scheduled from April 23-28, 2026, with two gold medals available in the Under 21 Men's and Women's IQ Foil events. The Thai team is represented by four young athletes: Wachirawit Than-up ("Wal"), Ratchanon Khunjaeng ("Klao"), Chanatkarn Charoensuk ("Cake"), and Wannida Winthachai ("Joy"), all under the guidance of coaches Sakda Sakulfaeng and Nattapong Pothinoparat ("Oat"). Recently, Secretary-General of the Windsurfing Association of Thailand, Mr. Phatthana Boonsawat, shared that following the team's arrival in Sanya on April 16th, the initial focus was on acclimatization, technical training, and understanding the rules and regulations, including flag signals. Permission for sea trainin g was granted by the host country on April 19th, allowing the Thai team to begin their practice sessions. The conditions were hot, with calm winds and small waves, but the athletes adapted and are now fully prepared for the competition. The Thai Surfing Association's head coach noted that the organizers initially specified the competition category as IQ Foil but then changed it to Gastra Foil, a category unique to China. However, just before the competition, it reverted to IQ Foil. Despite this confusion, the athletes' proficiency in IQ Foil ensured a smooth transition. The organizers have been praised for their preparation in terms of accommodation, competition venues, food, and transportation. The head coach will personally support the athletes on April 22nd. The 6th Asian Beach Games marks the return of windsurfing after a 10-year hiatus. The 5th Games in Da Nang, Vietnam in 2016 did not include windsurfing, with the last appearance being in 2014 in Phuket, where the Thai team secured two silver medals f rom Siriporn Kaewduangngam ("Dao") and Nattapong Pothinoparat ("Oat").
