Bangkok: The president of the Volleyball Association of Thailand has announced that the Thai women’s indoor volleyball team will field senior athletes to compete for their 17th SEA Games championship title. Meanwhile, the men’s indoor volleyball team has set a goal to at least reach the finals, aiming to secure two gold medals out of the four volleyball events in the competition.
According to Thai News Agency, Somporn Usibangyang, president of the Volleyball Association of Thailand, expressed confidence in the readiness of the national volleyball teams for the upcoming 33rd SEA Games, scheduled to take place in Thailand from December 9-20, 2025. He stated that the draw results for both the men’s and women’s teams are satisfactory. The women’s team, a 16-time champion, is determined to secure their 17th title by sending their best athletes. Some players are currently training at the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) Huamark, while others are engaged in international leagues. A training camp will commence two weeks before the competition to ensure team cohesion and preparedness.
Somporn further explained that the men’s team, comprising mostly of key players already training in Thailand, has been practicing consistently without any issues. Their ambition is to reach the finals, given the strong performances of other ASEAN teams such as Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Cambodia.
Both the women’s and men’s teams are currently utilizing the facilities at the Sports Science Center of the SAT. “We would like to thank the SAT for their continued support of the training camp, physical fitness testing, and other facilities, from the end of the Volleyball Nations League to the SEA Games,” Somporn stated.
The draw for the 2025 SEA Games placed the Thai women’s team in Group A alongside the Philippines and Singapore, while Group B features Vietnam, Indonesia, Myanmar, and Malaysia. The men’s team finds itself in Group A with Vietnam, Singapore, and Laos, while Group B includes defending champion Indonesia, Cambodia, the Philippines, and Myanmar.
The 33rd SEA Games will feature four gold medals in volleyball, with indoor volleyball (men’s and women’s teams) at Indoor Stadium Huamark, and beach volleyball (men’s and women’s teams) in Chonburi Province. The Thai Volleyball Association is targeting gold medals in women’s indoor volleyball and women’s beach volleyball.
