Thailand Adds Prayer Carriages to Southern Trains for Eid

Thailand: Thailand's state railway has introduced specially modified prayer carriages on southern train routes to accommodate Muslim passengers traveling for the upcoming Eid al-Adha holiday, officials said on Friday.

According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn ordered the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) to fast-track the modifications to support the religious practices of travelers heading to their hometowns. The service began on Friday.

Anan Phonimdaeng, acting governor of the SRT, said the railway converted third-class passenger carriages into dedicated prayer spaces. The carriages feature four partitioned rooms separating men and women, alongside designated areas for ritual washing in accordance with Islamic principles.

The prayer carriages are attached to rapid train services operating between Bangkok's Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal and the southern destinations of Yala and Narathiwat's Suhai Kolok.

Security measures have also been heightened, with officials monitoring onboard CCTV systems and cooperating with railway police to ensure safety throughout the holiday travel period, the SRT said.
