Bangkok: The Thai government has expressed satisfaction regarding the country's improvement in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) rankings, moving up five positions from 58th to 53rd. The government intends to build on this success by further enhancing students' critical thinking, media literacy, and AI skills, beginning at the primary education level.
According to Thai News Agency, the Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, Lieutenant Colonel Patthadarasmi Thongslueykorn, announced the favorable results of PISA 2025, which indicated a significant rise in the average scores of Thai students in science, mathematics, and reading compared to PISA 2022. The scores improved to 432 in science, 407 in mathematics, and 392 in reading, showcasing a marked development in students' reasoning, analytical thinking, and real-world application of knowledge.
Thailand was among eight countries that showed substantial improvement in all three evaluated areas. Additionally, the proportion of students achieving competencies at or above the basic level increased significantly, demonstrating not only overall improvement but also an elevation in individual student capabilities.
Lieutenant Colonel Patthadarasmi attributed these advancements to the collective efforts of various stakeholders, including educators, students, parents, and related agencies. She emphasized the importance of using PISA data beyond rankings, to guide educational development and tailor learning to the specific needs of different student groups.
The 2025 assessment also evaluated digital learning, where Thailand scored 476 points in computational problem-solving. This highlights the necessity of nurturing critical thinking and problem-solving skills in the digital context alongside traditional academic skills.
Looking forward, the Ministry of Education plans to enhance the AI Framework for both students and teachers, to be completed within the year. This initiative aims to embed media and AI literacy skills within the curriculum, enabling students to critically assess information and use AI responsibly.
Anticipating future assessments, PISA 2029 will include evaluations of Media and AI Literacy, underscoring the importance of developing these skills from an early age.
The Deputy Spokesperson reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring that improvements in PISA rankings translate into real-world skills for all Thai children, preparing them for a rapidly evolving global landscape. The PISA 2025 assessment involved a sample of 8,547 students from 273 schools across various educational systems in Thailand.
