Thailand Aims to Become a Global Transportation Hub

Jakarta:Minister Pipat Phakdi has unveiled his vision for the 24th anniversary of the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTTPP), emphasizing the goal of transforming Thailand into a global transportation hub. His strategy includes connecting the Andaman Sea with the Gulf of Thailand to enhance maritime transport routes, thereby increasing economic opportunities and setting a foundation for future generations.

According to Thai News Agency, Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, who also serves as Deputy Prime Minister, led the anniversary celebration on October 9, 2026, at the OTTPP headquarters. He was accompanied by Jirarooj Sukulrat, the office's director, as well as other executives and staff members.

Pipat described the OTTPP as a vital "think tank" for the Ministry of Transport and directed it to accelerate the planning of a maritime transport network. This plan aims to position Thailand as a key freight transport hub between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The strategy includes studying the potential of ports and logistics networks, and their connectivity with land and rail systems to boost competitiveness and attract international transport operators.

The Minister expressed optimism about the future, stating, "We are building infrastructure and opportunities for our descendants in the next 30-50 years to see what our generation has contributed to the nation."

Jirarooj Sukulrat provided updates on key policies, noting progress in three main areas

1. The Integrated Ticketing System is advancing, with legislation aimed at reducing electric train fares by 2027 and extending the system to buses and ferries by 2028.

2. Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) is progressing, with efforts to establish legal frameworks and guidelines for leveraging development areas to improve public transportation connectivity.

3. Public transportation development in regional cities is being prioritized to alleviate traffic issues, promote public transport use, and empower local governments to create sustainable systems.
