Thailand and Japan Collaborate on Low-Orbit Satellite Study in Space Venture

Bangkok: Thailand and Japan have embarked on a collaborative venture in space exploration focused on studying low Earth orbit satellites. The Cabinet has approved this initiative to foster future cooperation in the space industry.

According to Thai News Agency, Lieutenant Colonel Patthadarasmi Thongslueykorn, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that the Cabinet has sanctioned the draft Memorandum of Cooperation on space activities. This agreement involves the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation of Thailand and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan. The Cabinet also authorized the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation to sign the memorandum on behalf of Thailand.

The memorandum marks a significant step towards enhancing space collaboration between the two nations. Its objectives include promoting the development of space technology, fostering industrial cooperation, advancing human resource development, and generating economic value from space activities in the future.

The primary focus of the cooperation is joint studies on Low Earth Orbit Satellite Constellations. This technology is essential for supporting civilian life, industrial growth, and national security. The study will evaluate the potential applications of Japanese technology in Thailand and explore future cooperation projects.

Additionally, the study aims to develop the space industry in both countries and support Thailand's space initiatives arising from low Earth orbit satellite utilization. Both nations may broaden their cooperation to other mutually agreed areas.

The memorandum involves joint studies conducted with the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. These studies will entail data exchanges, industry coordination, and preparation of a joint study summary to facilitate further cooperation.

The memorandum is effective for three years from signing and can be extended for additional three-year terms. It provides a cooperative framework without imposing legal or financial obligations or transferring financial or material state resources between the parties.

Captain Patthadarasmi emphasized the collaboration as a crucial step in Thai-Japanese cooperation in space technology. It aims to lay the foundation for developing space activities that could enhance economic value and industrial capabilities in both countries.
