Thailand and Timor-Leste Strengthen Ties with Direct Flights and Bilateral Agreements

Bangkok:Thailand and Timor-Leste are enhancing their cooperation, with plans to launch direct flights between Bangkok and Dili to boost trade and investment.

According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Prime Minister Kai Rala Xanana Guzmão of Timor-Leste met at Government House to discuss bilateral relations. They witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a bilateral dialogue mechanism, focusing on five key areas of cooperation.

The two countries are preparing to celebrate the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027 and have scheduled their first bilateral dialogue meeting in Timor-Leste to outline future cooperation. In security matters, they plan to enhance military cooperation and combat online and transnational crime, with Thailand supporting a memorial for international forces in Timor-Leste.

Economically, Thailand aims to aid Timor-Leste's food security and promote Thai agricultural exports, while concluding a memorandum on rice trade. Both nations also seek to foster private sector investment, especially in agriculture, energy, infrastructure, tourism, and hotels. An air services agreement is being drafted to facilitate direct flights, promoting travel, business connections, and tourism.

In development, Thailand is finalizing a three-year cooperation plan (2026-2028) in sustainable agriculture, community development, public health, and human resource development. Since 2001, Thailand has offered over 800 scholarships and training to Timor-Leste personnel and supports child and youth development projects.

Regionally, Thailand supports Timor-Leste's integration into ASEAN and its future ASEAN chairmanship, while both countries exchanged views on Myanmar, prioritizing regional peace and cooperation. The discussions aim to strengthen Thai-Timor-Leste relations, boost market expansion, increase investment, improve transport links, and enhance quality of life for sustainable prosperity.
