New york: Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, expressed satisfaction with Thailand’s ability to articulate its position at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. He noted that Cambodia’s statements at the UNGA contradicted previously agreed-upon terms. Mr. Sihasak emphasized the growing international understanding of Thailand’s stance on peace and reiterated the importance of ongoing dialogue with Cambodia, believing that bilateral discussions could lead to a successful resolution.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Sihasak welcomed the opportunity to clarify Thailand’s position on the international stage. He revealed that prior discussions with Malaysia and the United States highlighted their support for Thailand and Cambodia to engage in dialogue. Mr. Sihasak criticized Cambodia for offering unilateral information to gain an advantage, despite earlier discussions and agreements that called for sincerity. He stressed the need for factual clarification in response to Cambodia’s contradictory statements.
Mr. Sihasak also addressed the international community’s response, affirming his commitment to truthful communication. He expressed concern about the future of the Thai-Cambodian border situation and indicated his intention to consult with the Prime Minister. Regarding the resolution of this issue, Mr. Sihasak advocated for a bilateral approach, stating that there was no need to escalate the matter to the international level. Mr. Sihasak outlined that the Thai-Cambodian stance in the coming months would largely depend on Cambodia’s actions, as Thailand’s position remains committed to pursuing peace. He acknowledged that further progress towards peace has yet to be achieved.
