Chiang rai: The National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) and Chiang Rai Province are spearheading an initiative to harness drone technology as a key tool in disaster response efforts. This innovative strategy aims to bolster readiness and resilience in managing various disaster scenarios across the region.
According to Thai News Agency, the NRCT, in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, and local authorities in Chiang Rai, is actively exploring the use of a "Drone System for Disaster Preparedness in Northern Thailand." The initiative was highlighted during a recent visit to the Drone System Development Center for Disaster Preparedness in Northern Thailand, located in the Wiang Phang Kham Subdistrict of Mae Sai District. Key figures attending the event included Dr. Wiparat Dee-ong, Director of NRCT, Mr. Prasert Jitpleecheep, Deputy Governor of Chiang Rai Province, and Associate Professor Dr. Sujarit Koonthanakulwong, a key strategic program director under the National Research and Innovation Policy.
Dr. Wiparat Dee-ong emphasized the NRCT's commitment to leveraging research and innovation to enhance national disaster management capabilities. The deployment of drone technology is seen as a pivotal advancement, improving the efficiency of monitoring and surveying high-risk areas and facilitating rescue operations. The initiative also focuses on developing skilled personnel and a network of drone pilots, ensuring rapid and precise situational assessments to effectively manage emergencies and minimize loss.
Mr. Prasert Jitpleecheep highlighted Chiang Rai's vulnerability to flooding and landslides, particularly in Mae Sai District, which has previously experienced severe flash floods. The integration of drone technology is expected to significantly enhance the province's ability to monitor and respond to such disasters, ultimately increasing public confidence in the region's disaster management strategies.
Mr. Pisit Mitrkuakul, President of the Thai Association of Model Aircraft and Radio Control Sports, outlined the association's collaborative efforts with the NRCT to further develop and apply drone technology in disaster relief missions. The association is focused on building a robust network of trained drone pilots to support area surveys, situation monitoring, and the transport of relief supplies. Ensuring effective integration and cooperation across sectors remains a top priority to maximize the potential of drone technology in disaster response.
The project, backed by the NRCT, has already established four drone system development centers and trained over 100 drone pilots in accordance with the standards of the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT). These centers are equipped with drones capable of real-time image transmission and transporting up to 50 kilograms of relief supplies. Future plans include the development of a drone-based disaster warning system and automated landing stations to further enhance emergency response capabilities.
