Bangkok: Thailand recently held discussions with the Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding World Heritage sites in line with international recommendations. Mr. Suchart, leading a delegation from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, emphasized the nation's ongoing dedication to these efforts, which include plans to propose "Chiang Mai: The Capital of Lanna" as a World Heritage site in the coming year.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Suchart Chomklin, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, headed the Thai delegation at the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee. The meeting took place at the BEXCO Exhibition and Convention Center in Busan, South Korea, where the Thai team engaged with Mr. Lazare Eloundou Assomo, Director-General of the World Heritage Centre. The delegation included key figures such as Dr. Raveewan Pooridej, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry; Mr. Atthapol Charoenchanasa, Director-General of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation; and Mr. Bannarak Sermthong, Secretary-General of the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONREP).
Mr. Suchart conveyed that under Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's leadership, the government prioritizes the conservation of natural resources and cultural heritage. The Ministry is tasked with managing World Heritage sites to international standards while balancing conservation, development, and the quality of life in local communities to achieve true sustainability.
The discussions fostered a cooperative atmosphere with both parties exchanging views on the management of World Heritage sites. Mr. Suchart expressed gratitude to the World Heritage Centre and its advisory experts for their support. The recent designation of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan as a World Heritage site has been met with enthusiasm in Thailand, as it promises cultural stability, national unity, and economic benefits for locals previously dependent on agriculture.
Thailand reiterated its commitment to UNESCO guidelines, particularly for the Dong Phaya Yen-Khao Yai Forest Complex. Mr. Suchart also mentioned the planned nomination of "Chiang Mai: The Capital of Lanna" as a World Heritage site, highlighting its historical and cultural significance through its eight historical sites and landmarks, which reflect the Lanna culture and the interaction between people and nature.
The Director of the World Heritage Centre commended Thailand for its longstanding participation and understanding of the World Heritage nomination process, urging Thailand to share its experience with countries yet to have a World Heritage site. Mr. Suchart affirmed Thailand's willingness to assist these nations in the future. This meeting underscores Thailand's active role in global heritage conservation, strengthening ties with the World Heritage Centre and ensuring these cultural treasures are preserved for future generations.
