Thailand Launches AIGW 2026 to Establish Itself as AI Governance Hub

Bangkok: The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DE) and the Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA) have launched AI Governance Week 2026 (AIGW 2026), showcasing Thailand's readiness to become a regional hub for AI Governance. The event, themed 'Connecting the Right Dots: From Global AI Principles to Real-World Practice,' is taking place from June 29th to July 3rd, 2026, at the Eastin Grand Hotel Phaya Thai and the Mandarin Hotel Bangkok.

According to Thai News Agency, AIGW 2026 serves as an international platform bringing together policymakers, technology companies, finance, education, law, and justice system representatives, alongside AI Governance experts from over 40 organizations in Thailand and abroad. The aim is to connect global AI governance principles to real-world applications in the Thai context. Thailand's potential to become a regional AI Governance hub is showcased through three key mechanisms: 'AIGPC - AI EIA Playbook and Toolkits - AI Red Teaming.'

Mr. Chaiyanok Chidchob, Minister of Digital Economy and Society, emphasized AI's transformative role in the economy, society, business, education, and government services. He highlighted the importance of building 'trust' as a foundation for safe, responsible, and sustainable AI implementation. Thailand ranks highly in several aspects of AI Governance, which reflects its shift from policy to practical implementation.

The event marks a significant step in upgrading Thailand's existing AI Governance Center to the AI Governance Practice Center (AIGPC), positioning Thailand as a regional hub for AI Ethics and Governance. AIGW 2026 features activities across various dimensions to drive AI Governance from international principles to practical application. This includes collaboration from government, industry, academia, civil society, international organizations, and the public.

On the first day, Prof. Dr. Urs Gasser, an AI Governance expert, discussed the importance of ensuring safe and responsible AI innovation. Dr. Chaichana Mitraphan, Director of ETDA, is set to deliver a keynote address on building AIGPC as a regional hub for AI Ethics and Governance.

AIGW 2026 spans five days, each dedicated to specific themes and activities, such as the Thailand Banking AI Red Team Challenge 2026, forums on AI in education, workshops, and discussions on AI law and regulation. The event culminates with Thailand's first AI Red Teaming test to ensure robust and responsible AI systems.

One of AIGW 2026's key objectives is to showcase Thailand's potential in driving AI Governance from 'principles' to 'practical implementation' through three mechanisms: promoting the AIGPC center, launching the AI EIA Playbook and Toolkits, and initiating Thailand's first AI Red Teaming project. These initiatives reflect Thailand's role in developing tools and best practices suitable for the Thai context, aiming to share experiences internationally and establish itself as a regional hub for Responsible AI and AI Governance.
