Bangkok: The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment is intensifying efforts to address global warming by pushing forward the draft Climate Change Act. The Department of Climate Change Mitigation is taking swift action to ensure the enactment of this crucial legislation.
According to Thai News Agency, on May 5, 2026, Mr. Suchart Chomklin, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, directed the expedited submission of the draft Climate Change Act to facilitate its prompt enactment. The objective is to establish Thailand as a regional leader in a low-carbon economy and improve citizens' quality of life by equipping them to manage climate-related disasters in the long term. Dr. Pirun Saiyasitpanich, Director-General of the Department of Climate Change and Environment, along with his team, initiated the review of the draft Climate Change Act. The review was conducted in collaboration with the Office of the Council of State, using electronic means. Mr. Sansern Kraijitti, Chairman of the Council of State, Committee 7, presided over the meeting.
The meeting addressed the overview, objectives, principles, and significant elements of the draft bill, which consists of 205 articles spread across 14 chapters. It includes four operational mechanisms aimed at achieving its goals:
1. Policy mechanisms to establish net-zero greenhouse gas emission targets in partnership with national policy committees.
2. Mechanisms for climate risk management and adaptation to impacts at regional and sectoral levels.
3. Mechanisms for reducing greenhouse gas emissions under international obligations to boost trade competitiveness.
4. Financial mechanisms through a climate fund to support investments in greenhouse gas reduction and enhance the country's capability to transition to a low-carbon society and economy.
