Thailand Seeks German Support for Climate Challenge Mitigation

Bangkok: Thailand is negotiating with Germany to request their support in addressing Thailand's climate challenges. The Department of Climate Change Mitigation, under the directive of the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, aims to accelerate talks with the German government to secure IKI Large Grant 2026 funding for this purpose.

According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Pirun Saiyasitpanich, Director-General of the Department of Climate Change and Environment, along with other executives, has been tasked by Mr. Suchart Chomklin, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, to negotiate a framework for grant allocation from Germany. This collaboration recognizes Thailand as a strategic partner in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and building climate resilience under the IKI Large Grant 2026 program. A preliminary meeting was held electronically on April 29th with the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUKN) of Germany.

Initial agreements propose a request for pound 30 million (approximately 1,140 million baht) to support Thailand's efforts. This funding will be divided into two parts: pound 10 million (approximately 380 million baht) for policy formulation and operational mechanism development, and a large grant of pound 20 million (approximately 760 million baht) to enhance greenhouse gas emission reduction and analyze the co-benefits of Thailand's natural resources management.

The Department is working to finalize the funding allocation framework with Germany by June 2026, coinciding with the 2026 Bonn Climate Change Conference in Bonn, Germany.
