Bangkok: Thailand is positioning itself as a vital link between Myanmar and ASEAN, with a focus on combating drug issues and fostering border stability. The Prime Minister emphasized Thailand's role in enhancing cooperation and ensuring the safety and quality of life for its citizens.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Ratchada Thanadirek, Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that Mr. Tin Maung Swe, Myanmar's Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with the Thai Prime Minister during an official visit. The discussions centered on strengthening Thai-Myanmar relations and addressing key issues impacting the security, economy, and quality of life in both nations.
The Prime Minister highlighted the shared concerns between Thailand and Myanmar, particularly drug trafficking, transnational crime, transboundary haze, and border conflicts. These challenges require collaboration, and Thailand is prepared to act as a bridge, facilitating dialogue and cooperation with ASEAN to address these issues effectively.
An invitation was extended to Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Myanmar's President, to visit Thailand for further discussions on mutual interests. Both countries agreed to enhance cooperation on three primary fronts.
First, in terms of border stabilization, Thailand urged Myanmar to intensify efforts against drug trafficking, illegal gambling, and transnational crime, while addressing issues like transboundary haze and border conflicts. The Myanmar government acknowledged the impact on Thailand and committed to speeding up resolutions to these challenges.
Second, economic cooperation and development were discussed, with the Thai Prime Minister noting the benefits of peaceful and stable border areas for trade, investment, and development. Thailand expressed readiness to share agricultural expertise to help reduce agricultural burning and haze issues.
Lastly, supporting Myanmar's role in ASEAN was emphasized. The Prime Minister reiterated Thailand's commitment to engaging with Myanmar, believing that its active participation in ASEAN will foster regional cooperation and tackle issues affecting the population effectively.
Myanmar's Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed gratitude for Thailand's support and affirmed continued cooperation between the two nations as neighbors.
