According to Thai News Agency, Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkaew, in a statement following a Cabinet meeting, discussed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' retaliatory measures against Cambodia after mortar rounds were fired into Thai territory, injuring Thai soldiers. The Ministry has formally protested to the Cambodian government, seeking an immediate explanation and an apology, emphasizing the necessity of accountability. Initial reports suggest it was an accident, but a thorough explanation is required to prevent further injuries.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is acting within its jurisdiction regarding this issue. On the military front, regional mechanisms such as the Generalized System of Preferences (GBC) might be elevated to discussions at the Ministers of Defence level to address the situation appropriately.

When questioned about the military's potential for immediate retaliation in such accidents, Mr. Sihasak stressed that responses must be proportional. If Cambodia can adequately explain the accident and specify corrective actions, the protest letter serves as a suitable response. However, if the act was intentional, alternative measures would be considered.

On political matters, Mr. Sihasak addressed his involvement in campaigning, noting his past appearances on television as a prime ministerial candidate focusing on foreign policy. He emphasized the importance of articulating all key party policies and mentioned plans to campaign actively on January 11th.
