Thailand Sets Ambitious Net Zero Target at World Environment Day 2026 Event

Bangkok: Fighting a turbulent global world, Thailand aims to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050 as highlighted during the 2026 World Environment Day event. Minister Suchart Chomklin spearheaded the initiative, emphasizing the collaboration of all sectors under the theme "Together We Adapt, Together We Change, Together We Build Thailand to Combat Global Warming."

According to Thai News Agency, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) organized the event at the Vayupak Conference Room, Centara Life Government Complex, Chaeng Wattana, Bangkok. It was attended by high-level executives, government officials, private sector representatives, international organizations, youth, and the general public. The initiative, led by Minister Suchart, stresses the importance of uniting various sectors to implement environmental and climate change policies effectively.

Minister Suchart underscored the government's commitment, under Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's leadership, to tackle climate change, manage natural resources, and improve environmental quality. Key strategies include water management, disaster prevention, and natural resource conservation, with an emphasis on achieving a net-zero greenhouse gas emission target by 2050. The Ministry is prepared to collaborate with government agencies, private sectors, and civil society to foster understanding and public participation in environmental conservation. A draft Climate Change Act has been submitted to the Cabinet and is under review by the Council of State.

The global climate crisis, marked by extreme weather events, has significantly impacted Thailand, affecting its economy and citizens' quality of life. Data from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) highlights the urgency of addressing the "global boiling" phenomenon. Minister Suchart emphasized that the climate crisis requires collective action from the entire nation and global community, making this year's World Environment Day an essential platform for raising awareness and encouraging cooperation to prepare Thailand for future environmental challenges.

Dr. Pirun Saiyasitpanich, Director-General of the Department of Climate Change and Environment, reiterated the need for cooperation from all sectors, especially the private sector, in shifting towards a green economy. Public engagement through behavioral changes is also crucial in reducing environmental impact. The event featured a keynote address by Ms. Dechen Tsering from UNEP, a panel discussion, and a green innovation exhibition, highlighting the collaborative efforts needed to drive Thailand towards a sustainable future.
