Bangkok: The race for Wat Phra Mahathat to be recognized as Thailand's next World Heritage Site has officially commenced as the 48th World Heritage Committee meeting gets underway in Busan, South Korea.
According to Thai News Agency, the 48th Session of the World Heritage Committee, which is taking place from July 19-29, 2026, has brought together representatives from 196 Member States, UNESCO, and various global organizations. The agenda includes the evaluation of new World Heritage Site nominations, monitoring the conservation status of current sites, and setting guidelines for international cooperation in heritage conservation.
Leading the Thai delegation at this pivotal gathering is Mr. Suchart Chomklin, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment. Accompanying him are Dr. Raveewan Pooridej, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, and Mr. Bannarak Sermthong, Secretary-General of the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning, along with other key executives. Their mission is to advocate for the nomination of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, located in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, as a World Heritage Site.
The nomination is slated for consideration between July 24-26, 2026. Should it be successful, Wat Phra Mahathat will become Thailand's 9th World Heritage Site. Its recognition would mark a significant achievement for the nation, highlighting the global appreciation for Thailand's rich cultural heritage.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, through the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONREP), has been instrumental in coordinating efforts for the nomination. This involves collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, local authorities in Nakhon Si Thammarat, and other relevant entities. Preparations include compiling academic research, preparing detailed nomination documents, and establishing protective measures and site management plans.
Efforts also extend to liaising with the World Heritage Centre and UNESCO's advisory bodies to ensure compliance with international standards. This initiative underscores the Thai government's dedication to its World Heritage Convention commitments and the Ministry's leading role in national heritage conservation. Through ONREP, Thailand aims to secure the successful nomination of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, promoting cultural heritage conservation alongside sustainable development for future generations.
