Bangkok: The Minister of Justice has confirmed that former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra must wear an Electronic Monitoring (EM) bracelet as part of the conditions for his parole, stating that his age does not exempt him from this requirement.
According to Thai News Agency, Police Lieutenant General Ruttapol Nawarat, the Minister of Justice, clarified the conditions surrounding Thaksin's parole. The resolution of the Parole Board at the Ministry of Justice, dated April 29th, mandates the use of an EM bracelet for Thaksin. Lieutenant General Ruttapol dismissed claims that Thaksin's advanced age should exempt him from this requirement, emphasizing adherence to the set criteria.
In response to questions about Dr. Tul Sitthisomwong, a political activist planning to oppose Thaksin's parole on the grounds of his previous incarcerations, Pol. Gen. Ruttapol stated that he has yet to see any formal opposition filings. He noted that any objections would need legal scrutiny and further evaluation by the relevant committee, although he believes the issues have been thoroughly considered.
Addressing concerns about Thaksin's potential political activities post-parole, Pol. Gen. Ruttapol explained that there is no restriction against him engaging in political discourse. However, regarding international travel during the parole period, he noted that while it is generally unlikely, any travel would necessitate court approval.
