Thaksin Shinawatra Released on Parole with Electronic Monitoring

Bangkok: Thaksin Shinawatra has been released from Klong Prem Prison on his second parole, and will wear an EM (Electronic Monitoring) bracelet for probation until September 2026. Thaksin Shinawatra has left Klong Prem Central Prison after being granted parole for the second time, having completed his eight-month sentence. He is wearing an EM (electronic monitoring) bracelet as per the probation conditions. He was greeted by a large crowd of Red Shirt supporters and Pheu Thai Party MPs before heading to his residence, Chan Song La, for rest.

According to Thai News Agency, at 7:50 AM on May 11, 2026, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra departed from Klong Prem Central Prison after being granted conditional release for the second time. The atmosphere in front of the prison gate was filled with Red Shirt supporters from various provinces across the country, along with over 30 Pheu Thai Party leaders and Members of Parliament, who gathered to welcome him and participate in the national anthem ceremony at 8:00 AM.

For this parole, Mr. Thaksin must comply with key conditions set by the Parole Board of the Ministry of Justice: wearing an electronic monitoring (EM) bracelet at all times, undergoing probation, reporting as scheduled, and being prohibited from traveling outside the area without permission until his release on September 9, 2026. Mr. Thaksin has traveled to Ban Chan Song La, Soi Charansanitwong 69, which has been notified as his probation location.

Retracing the events, Mr. Thaksin returned to Klong Prem Prison on September 9, 2025, following an order from the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions, which stipulated a one-year prison sentence, excluding the time spent receiving medical treatment at the Police Hospital on the 14th floor. To date, Mr. Thaksin has served eight months of his sentence, or two-thirds of the total sentence, thus meeting the criteria for parole according to the Department of Corrections regulations.

Throughout the morning, police officers maintained a strong security presence around the prison to facilitate the movement of the crowds and manage traffic, under the close watch of both Thai and international media.
