Bangkok: "Tik Shiro," a well-known singer, received a two-year prison sentence without suspension for a drunk driving accident that resulted in the deaths of two individuals late in 2024. The Min Buri Criminal Court also revoked his driver's license.
According to Thai News Agency, the court delivered its verdict in courtroom 301 against Manaswin Nanthasen, popularly known as Tik Shiro. The singer was charged with driving under the influence and causing a fatal accident on the Thep Rak intersection bridge on October 10, 2024. Initially, the offense warranted a four-year imprisonment, but the sentence was halved due to Tik Shiro's confession.
Despite his remorse, attendance at the victims' funerals, and initial compensation to the victims' families, the court noted that a civil compensation agreement had not been finalized. The court highlighted that the accident was a serious offense that could have been avoided, leading to the decision not to suspend the sentence and to revoke Tik Shiro's driver's license.
The case saw Tik Shiro providing an initial compensation of 3 million baht. However, the victims' families filed a civil lawsuit demanding 21 million baht, later negotiating it down to 18 million baht. Tik Shiro, finding the amount excessive, sought a reduction to 7 million baht, which the plaintiff opposed. This civil lawsuit is currently under consideration by the Min Buri Civil Court, with 500,000 baht already presented to the court as compensation, separate from the ongoing civil case.
Following the verdict, Tik Shiro's lawyer submitted a bail application for appeal, using a 200,000 baht insurance policy as collateral. The court granted temporary release during the appeal process, with bail set at 200,000 baht. Conditions of the bail include restrictions on leaving Thailand and engaging in similar activities to those he was charged with, violations of which would breach the bail agreement.
