Total Lunar Eclipse to Grace the Skies on March 3, 2026

Bangkok: A rare celestial event is set to captivate sky watchers as a total lunar eclipse will occur on March 3, 2026. The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) has announced that the eclipse will be visible in Thailand from 6:23 PM to 7:02 PM, presenting a striking spectacle as the moon takes on a brick-red hue.

According to Thai News Agency, the eclipse will start with the moon rising from the eastern horizon at 6:23 PM, completely obscured by the Earth's shadow. This total eclipse phase will last approximately 39 minutes, after which the moon will gradually emerge from the shadow, transitioning into a partial eclipse that will end at 8:17 PM. The event is a must-see, as the next total lunar eclipse won't occur until December 31, 2028.

Observers are encouraged to find a location with an unobstructed view of the eastern horizon to fully enjoy the event, which may be affected by local weather conditions. NARIT has established five main observation points across Thailand, including Sirindhorn Astronomical Park in Chiang Mai and observatories in Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen, and Chachoengsao. These sites will be open to the public from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM on the night of the eclipse, offering a free opportunity to view not only the eclipse but other celestial objects as well. For those unable to attend in person, NARIT will provide a live broadcast on their Facebook and YouTube channels.

This phenomenon occurs when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align perfectly, with the Earth positioned between the Sun and Moon. The moon passes through the Earth's shadow, creating the visual effect known to ancient Thais as "Rahu swallowing the Moon." Lunar eclipses happen roughly twice a year, but their visibility varies based on geographic location and timing.

As the moon's orbit is inclined by about 5 degrees relative to Earth's orbital plane, it does not always pass into the Earth's shadow, making events like this a rare sight. This upcoming eclipse offers a unique chance to witness a natural wonder that highlights the intricate dance of celestial bodies in our solar system.
