Bangkok: Mr. Surawong Thienthong, Minister of Tourism and Sports, praised Sai Scott for addressing foreign tourists’ inappropriate behavior, emphasizing the importance of preserving natural resources and Thai dignity. He warned tourists against actions that could harm the environment, expressing belief that conservation efforts are crucial regardless of an individual’s position.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Surawong commented on the incident involving Sai Scott, who confronted tourists about their behavior. He noted that while Sai’s actions might not be universally appreciated, they were necessary to uphold environmental and cultural respect. He acknowledged that he was not present during the incident and could not ascertain whether the tourists acted with discriminatory intent when using the phrase ‘Ni Hao.’
The Minister addressed claims from tourists who believed they could act freely after paying for their visit. He highlighted the need to differentiate between rights and responsibilities, using the example of Thai tourists abroad. Mr. Surawong stated that the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment would investigate the facts, and he had not received any formal reports on the issue.
Regarding reports of businesses violating laws by taking tourists into protected areas, Mr. Surawong mentioned that the responsibility lies with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. He assured that the Ministry of Tourism would collaborate with major business operators to ensure compliance and protect natural sites. He stressed the collective responsibility in preventing environmental degradation.
Mr. Surawong also remarked that media should be cautious in covering such incidents to avoid negatively impacting tourism. He noted that if Sai Scott were removed from her advisory position, it would not deter conservationist efforts, as these initiatives are driven by intention rather than official roles. The Minister emphasized that conservation work often transcends formal positions, with contributions from both individuals and the private sector.
