Tragic Accident Claims Lives of Seven Monks on Pilgrimage

Ubon ratchathani: The chairman of the House Committee on Religion expressed his deep sorrow and offered condolences for the deaths of seven Buddhist monks, stating that no one wants to see a similar tragedy repeat itself. Thivalarat Angkinan, MP for Phetchaburi from the Bhumjaithai Party and Chair of the House of Representatives' Committee on Religion, Arts and Culture, visited the ailing monks at their hospital beds.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Thivalarat, accompanied by Mr. Somsak Boonprachom, committee member and advisor, participated in a merit-making ceremony and offered traditional Thai offerings at the funeral rites for the monks who died in an accident while on a pilgrimage from Wat Roi Phra Phutthabat Phu Manorom in Mukdahan Province to Nam Khun District in Ubon Ratchathani Province. Mr. Phusit Noisophakul, Deputy Governor of Ubon Ratchathani Province, presided over the ceremony, attended by numerous monks, local government officials, and members of the public.

His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen have graciously granted royal patronage to all the deceased monks' bodies, while the Supreme Patriarch has also provided continuous support for the funerals. The monks who tragically lost their lives were Phra Sakda Kittiyano, Phra Yutth Chayawuttho, Phra Nikhom Panyasaro, Phra Samruay Santachitto, Phra Yothin Khantitharo, Phra Chaisorn Kantasaro, and Phra Ratchata Techavaro.

The chairman paid respects to and visited four monks injured in the accident, who are receiving treatment at Sapphasitprasong Hospital in Ubon Ratchathani Province. One monk underwent surgery, while the others continue to receive medical care. Ms. Thivalarat emphasized that the incident deeply saddened Buddhists nationwide and is a loss no one wanted to happen. She, along with the committee, traveled to Wat Ban Nam Khun to participate in the funeral rites and offer encouragement to the grieving families and the public.

The Chairman of the Committee extended his best wishes for the monks' speedy recovery and recognized the dedication of the medical staff providing care. He affirmed the Committee's commitment to supporting and protecting Buddhism, ensuring that monks can safely practice their religious duties and that Buddhism remains a steadfast part of Thai society for generations to come.
