Bangkok: A severe storm that struck in the middle of the night led to a tragic incident where a 51-year-old man lost his life after a large tree collapsed onto his shelter in a coconut plantation located in the Phutthamonthon Sai 3 area.
According to Thai News Agency, the unfortunate event was reported to investigators at Thammasala Metropolitan Police Station around 11:00 PM on May 10, 2015. The authorities, along with rescue volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation, responded promptly to the scene on Phutthamonthon Sai 3 Road, Soi 18, within the Sala Thammasop Subdistrict of Thawi Watthana District.
Upon inspection, the responders found a hut situated approximately 200 meters into the coconut plantation, where Mr. Bula was discovered lifeless beneath the wreckage caused by the fallen tree. Volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation utilized electric saws and wood-cutting tools to clear the debris and retrieve the body.
Neighbors of the deceased reported that the storm had brought heavy rain and wind, which led to the collapse of temporary structures in the area. Initially, they did not find Mr. Bula and assumed he had left his home. However, after noticing his unusual absence, they rechecked the site and discovered a leg protruding from the wreckage, prompting them to alert the authorities.
Preliminary investigations by officers at Thammasala Police Station revealed that Mr. Bula hailed from Bueng Kan Province and served as a caretaker in the coconut plantation. The cause of death is presumed to be the result of the tree’s collapse. His body has been transported to the forensic department of Siriraj Hospital for an autopsy, while coordination with his relatives is underway for subsequent religious rites.
