Bangkok: The Ministry of Transport is providing free access to motorways and expressways during the Songkran festival in 2026 as part of a strategic plan to ensure smooth public travel. Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn has implemented seven measures aimed at maintaining safety and convenience on all routes. These measures include restoring road surfaces, ensuring adequate lighting, and offering full services to travelers.
According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, emphasized the necessity of these measures due to the ongoing Middle East conflict, which has affected Thailand's energy situation and could impact travel during the festival. With rising fuel prices, there is an expected shift in public travel behavior, with fewer long-distance trips and an increase in public transportation usage.
The Ministry forecasts a total traffic volume of 10.65 million vehicles on major highways and 15.89 million on expressways entering and exiting Bangkok over the 10-day festival period from April 10-19, 2026. Additionally, public transportation is expected to handle 18.58 million trips, showing a significant increase compared to the previous year. The Ministry has launched the "Smart Travel Songkran 2569" campaign to ensure safety and reduce accidents by at least 5%.
Minister Pipat outlined the readiness to handle public travel through three dimensions and seven measures. These include preventive actions such as free vehicle inspections, convenience services along travel routes, and the establishment of travel convenience centers at bus stations and rest areas. Traffic information services are readily available to the public, who can report accidents and check travel information online.
Traffic management includes nationwide highway travel coordination, public transportation system connectivity, and the dissemination of alternative routes. Safety measures are strictly enforced, including alcohol and drug testing for drivers and monitoring high-risk areas. A public awareness campaign urges adherence to traffic rules to ensure safety.
The Ministry is also offering toll-free travel on specific expressways and motorways for designated periods during the festival. This initiative, along with the restoration of construction sites and enhancement of safety measures, aims to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.
Minister Pipat emphasized the importance of excellent service for public transport users, controlling fares, and ensuring fuel supply. He also highlighted the need for continuous traffic monitoring and proactive management to maintain safety and efficiency during the Songkran festival.
