Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered government agencies to end their work with Anthropic, a leading artificial intelligence (AI) laboratory, as the U.S. Department of Defense prepares to declare the startup a supply chain risk. This decision is seen as a major attack on Anthropic following disagreements over regulating the technology's use. According to Thai News Agency, President Trump stated that there would be a six-month grace period for the Department of Defense and other agencies to cease using the company's products, while emphasizing that if Anthropic did not cooperate in the transition, he would use "the full powers of the president" to force the company to comply, which could result in severe civil and criminal penalties. Anthropic is financially supported by giants like Google (a subsidiary of Alphabet) and Amazon. This measure represents a drastic action by the U.S. government against companies that have helped the country become a leader in artificial intelligence, which is crit ical to national security. Anthropic Corporation (ANC) issued a statement saying it would contest the designation of the company as a risk by filing a lawsuit against the Department of Defense. The company believes the designation is legally incorrect and sets a dangerous precedent for all American companies negotiating with the government. It also affirmed that no threats or sanctions would change its stance against mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. Meanwhile, OpenAI, a competitor and supporter of Microsoft and Amazon, announced a deal to use its technology in the Department of Defense's classified network late Friday. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated via Platform X that the Department of Defense shares the company's principles regarding human responsibility over weapons systems and their non-use for mass espionage in the United States.
