Trump Threatens to Withdraw US from NATO

London: British media outlets are headlining the news as "Trump threatens to withdraw from NATO." British newspapers across Thursday headlined the same issue: U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to withdraw from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

According to Thai News Agency, the US leader expressed strong dissatisfaction with NATO allies' refusal to assist in the operation to reopen shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz amid the conflict with Iran, even threatening to withdraw the US from the 76-year-old alliance.

NATO, composed of members from European countries, the United States, and Canada, was founded in 1949 with the primary objective of countering the risk of attack from the Soviet Union at that time, and has always been a fundamental cornerstone of Western national security.

Experts say it remains unclear whether President Trump has the authority to withdraw from the alliance unilaterally, even though he has frequently made important decisions in the past without congressional approval. Some of these decisions are still being held accountable through US court processes.
