Two army officers removed over alleged fatal beating of a soldier in prison

Two army officers alleged to be responsible for the fatal beating of a 22-year-old conscript at an army prison in Surat Thani province last Saturday were removed from the army camp to the Army Circle 45 to facilitate police probe.

Army Circle 45 commander Maj Gen Wichai Tasanamonthien said he ordered the transfer of the two officers so as to facilitate police investigation and prevent them from getting interference with witnesses and evidence.

The move of the commander came after the mother of the victim, Private Yutkinan Boonniam, brought a witness who is her son's colleague, to give testimony to local police after finding that her son was beaten up at the army camp and later rushed to Surat Thani hospital for serious injuries on March 31. He died the next morning.

She later sought justice from the Army Circle 45 commander.

Army spokesman Col Winthai Suvaree said the army chief was following the incident closely and he had give assurance that all sides would be given justice.

He also offered apology for the family of the soldier if he was beaten to death at army camp.
