Two New Mines Discovered in Chong Bok Area: Violation of Ottawa Convention

Bangkok: The Army has reported the discovery of two additional new-type mines in the Chong Bok area, near the original incident site, emphasizing a clear violation of the Ottawa Convention. The Army Intelligence Department is set to invite the assistant military attach© to discuss the facts of the situation.

According to Thai News Agency, Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvari, the army spokesman, stated that during an inspection by the Suranaree Task Force and the 3rd Humanitarian Mine Action Unit, two new PMN2 anti-personnel mines were found in proximity to where a previous landmine incident injured three personnel from the 6021st Infantry Company on July 16, 2015. The mines were located just 30 centimeters from the original craters and have since been removed by the 3rd Humanitarian Mine Action Unit.

These actions are seen as a violation of Thai sovereignty and demonstrate an intention to harm Thai military forces, contravening the Ottawa Convention on the Prohibition of Anti-Personnel Mines. Both Thailand and Cambodia are signatories to this convention. The Royal Thai Army has called for ASEAN member states and other countries to condemn Cambodia for these actions. Furthermore, the Royal Thai Army Intelligence Department plans to brief assistant military attach©s in Thailand on the incident tomorrow.
