U.S. Approves Largest Ever Arms Sale to Taiwan Amid Rising Chinese Tensions

Washington: The United States has approved a record-breaking $11.1 billion arms sale to Taiwan, marking the largest military package ever sold to the island nation. This significant arms deal comes at a time when Taiwan is experiencing increased military pressure from China and represents the second such sale under President Donald Trump’s administration.

According to Thai News Agency, this extensive arms package includes eight major items crucial for Taiwan’s defense strategy. Among these are the HIMARS multiple rocket launcher system, self-propelled artillery, Javelin anti-tank missiles, Altius attack drones, and essential spare parts for various equipment. Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense has emphasized that this deal is part of an ongoing effort by the United States to help Taiwan maintain adequate self-defense capabilities and rapidly build a strong deterrent force, focusing on the principles of asymmetric warfare to uphold peace and stability in the region.

The Ministry further noted that the arms sale is in the process of being notified to the U.S. Congress. While Congress has the authority to suspend or alter the sale, Taiwan historically enjoys bipartisan support in the United States. The U.S. Department of Defense also highlighted the deal’s alignment with the economic and security interests of the United States, aiding Taiwan in its continuous military modernization and reliable self-defense efforts.

Influenced by U.S. guidance, Taiwan has been striving to modernize its military, focusing on smaller, more mobile weapons capable of precise targeting, such as drones. This modernization effort is part of Taiwan’s broader strategy to enhance its defense capabilities.

Taiwan’s presidential spokesperson, Karen Kuo, expressed appreciation for the U.S. support, affirming Taiwan’s commitment to furthering defense reforms and strengthening its military capabilities. She reiterated Taiwan’s dedication to self-defense and its ongoing efforts to maintain peace through military strength.
