Washington: U.S. Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-Deremer announced her resignation on Monday amid allegations of misconduct within the agency. Her decision to resign comes as Labor Department investigators near the completion of their investigation into complaints against her and a group of her aides.
According to Thai News Agency, the White House stated that Deputy Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling will serve as acting Secretary of Labor. Secretary Chavez-Deremer stated that although her term in the government has ended, she remains committed to fighting for American workers and is ready to move on to a new role in the private sector.
The months-long investigation into the Labor Department official stemmed from whistleblowers alleging professional misconduct, including allegations of an affair with a security officer and the misuse of government resources for personal travel. Chavez-Deremer was originally scheduled to testify in the coming days regarding these allegations.
This resignation makes her the third cabinet minister to be removed from President Donald Trump's administration in recent weeks, following Christine Noam, who was dismissed as Secretary of Homeland Security in March, and Pam Bondi, who was removed as Attorney General less than a month later.
Furthermore, sources close to discussions within the White House indicate that Mr. Trump is considering a broader cabinet reshuffle due to his growing dissatisfaction with the political consequences of the war with Iran. As for Ms. Chavez-Deremer, she assumed the position of Cabinet Secretary in March 2025 after serving two years in the U.S. House of Representatives. Her appointment at that time was met with unanimous bipartisan support in the Senate.
