Kyiv: Ukraine's police chief, Yevhen Zhukov, has resigned to take responsibility for a shooting incident in Kyiv, following the circulation of videos showing officers fleeing the scene instead of assisting civilians.
According to Thai News Agency, the resignation comes after a video went viral on social media, capturing two patrol officers abandoning their duties during the shooting. Zhukov, head of Ukraine's patrol police, labeled the officers' actions as unprofessional and shameful. As a combat-hardened officer, he stated that resigning was the proper course of action.
In response to the incident, both officers involved were immediately suspended. The State Investigation Agency has launched both disciplinary and criminal investigations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Interior Minister Igor Klimenko have openly criticized the police for neglecting their responsibilities and placing citizens in danger.
The tragic event resulted in six deaths and 14 injuries. The perpetrator, a 58-year-old man originally from Moscow but residing in Ukraine, initiated the attack by setting his apartment on fire before shooting at bystanders with an automatic rifle. He subsequently stormed a supermarket, taking hostages. After failed negotiations lasting over 40 minutes, a special operations unit intervened and killed the gunman. Currently, eight individuals, including one child, remain hospitalized. One adult is in critical condition, while the child is stable. The child tragically lost both parents in the incident.
Ukrainian security agencies are treating the incident as a potential act of terrorism. The Interior Minister has raised concerns regarding the firearms permit process, as the attacker's weapons were legally registered. The attacker had renewed his permit in December 2025, supported by a medical certificate claiming mental stability, which contradicts the violent behavior exhibited.
