New york: The United Nations has voiced serious concern over the mounting tensions between the United States and Iran, following a recent exchange of attacks. UN Secretary-General spokesman St©phane Dujarric issued a statement urging both nations to adhere to the ceasefire agreement and emphasized Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's commitment to ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Thai News Agency, the U.S. military conducted shelling operations against Iranian bases on Wednesday night, citing the destruction of perceived threats and the interception of an Iranian drone. Iran responded early Thursday with retaliatory shelling on a U.S. air base, after reports of explosions were heard near the port city of Bandar Abbas.
In the midst of this volatile situation, Axios News reported that negotiation teams from both the United States and Iran have reached a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to prolong the ceasefire for an additional 60 days and initiate discussions on Iran's nuclear program. However, the agreement remains pending due to the absence of approval from U.S. President Donald Trump.
On the Iranian side, although there has been no formal statement confirming acceptance of the MOU, U.S. officials have indicated that Iran's negotiating team has received approval from senior management and is prepared to sign the ceasefire extension agreement immediately, contingent upon U.S. approval.
