Bangkok: The Prime Minister confirmed that the United States will not link the Thai-Cambodian Declaration with tariff negotiations. Thailand will proceed with humanitarian mine clearance missions in accordance with international standards.

According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister’s Office Spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat revealed that last night, Malaysian Prime Minister and ASEAN Chair Anwar Ibrahim spoke again by phone with Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to reiterate important information related to humanitarian cooperation and discussions with the United States.

The spokesman stated that Prime Minister Anwar informed Prime Minister Anutin that, following his earlier discussions with the Thai Prime Minister, he had spoken again with President Donald Trump. The US leader agreed with the Thai government’s position that “humanitarian demining is a critical issue,” as stated in the joint Thai-Cambodian statement, and that it is urgently needed for the safety of the people of both countries.

President Trump has instructed Prime Minister Anwar to clearly inform the Thai government that the United States will not involve Thailand’s suspension of the Joint Declaration in the ongoing trade tariff negotiations between Thailand and the United States.

The spokesperson said that Prime Minister Anutin also asked Prime Minister Anwar if he could disclose the information to the public. The Malaysian leader confirmed that he could, and that Prime Minister Anwar would also disseminate the information through his own communication channels.

The spokesperson stated that the Prime Minister wishes to convey this information to the public who are closely following the situation, to ensure a correct understanding and to receive the latest facts from direct communication between the country’s leaders.

It should be noted that the letter from the United States Trade Representative (USTR) regarding the suspension of negotiations with Thailand was prepared before the Prime Minister’s meeting with President Trump, making this information more current and reliable.

“The Thai government remains committed to its humanitarian obligations, protecting the people of border areas, and working closely with the international community to maintain peace, security, and the highest national interests,” said Mr. Siripong.
