Washington: The United States is commemorating its 250th anniversary with extensive celebrations across the nation, despite being challenged by severe heatwaves, thunderstorms, and political tensions in certain regions.
According to Thai News Agency, the festivities, highlighted by dazzling fireworks displays, grand parades, and musical performances, have captivated millions of Americans.
In Washington, D.C., an impressive display of over 850,000 fireworks illuminated the sky for over 40 minutes at the National Mall. New York City joined in the celebrations with Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks, deploying more than 85,000 fireworks over the East River, Hudson River, and Brooklyn Bridge. The day featured world-class military aerobatics by the U.S. Air Force and international teams such as the United Kingdom's Red Arrow and French aerobatic groups over Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. These displays were accompanied by a parade of sailboats and warships from around the globe. Additionally, New York City and New Jersey co-hosted the International Naval Review and Sail250, which included antique sailboats and Royal Navy warships from over 20 countries parading in New York Harbor.
The festivities concluded with large-scale concerts and music festivals, featuring free performances by renowned artists. Christina Aguilera and Will Smith entertained audiences in Philadelphia, while Ne-Yo and Mary J. Blige performed in Times Square, New York City. In Los Angeles, Smashing Pumpkin and Chris Stapleton took to the stage, adding to the nationwide celebrations.
However, the celebrations faced challenges from extreme weather conditions. Several states experienced temperatures exceeding 38 degrees Celsius, resulting in the cancellation of ground parades in Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia for safety reasons. Additionally, severe thunderstorms prompted the temporary evacuation of people from the National Mall area before the evening events commenced.
In a political twist, President Donald Trump announced his plans to deliver celebratory speeches at the Mount Rushmore National Memorial and organize a large rally in the capital. This move has sparked criticism, with some accusing him of attempting to politicize the national anniversary in advance of the midterm elections later this year.
